SKIMMING
Skimming is a quick reading -
- To know the general meaning of a passage
- To know how the passage is organized
- To get an idea of the intention of the writer
SCANNING
Scanning is a quick reading, focusing on locating a piece of specific information.
INTENSIVE READING
EXTENSIVE READING
READING FOR PLEASURE… storybooks, novels, magazines, etc. It is carried out "to achieve a general understanding of the text.
WORD TO WORD READING
When the text is not understood in the first instance and requiresslow and careful analytical reading, e.g. reading a legal document is called word to word reading.
SPEED READING
THIS SKILL IS ACQUIRED AFTER MUCH PRACTICE AND KNOWING WHICH TECHNIQUE OF READING IS TO BE APPLIED FOR WHICH KIND OF TEXT.
Different reading techniques are needed to read
a variety of texts in order to understand concepts or enhance our knowledge. This
is necessary to make reading more meaningful, fruitful, and enjoyable. You can use a pointer to increase your reading speed.

Comprehending what we read is the most demanding aspect of
our reading and can positively impact many
facets of a student’s academic performance.
TIPS FOR READING EFFECTIVELY
1. Read a variety of materials as found in the newspaper
2. Circle unknown or unfamiliar words and look them up in the dictionary
3. After reading, recall as much of the information as possible understand the gist
4. Read interesting the subject matter to improve your reading skills
TECHNIQUES FOR GOOD COMPREHENSION
1. Skimming and Scanning.
Before you start to read, take a moment to preview the text. Read it quickly, without pausing to study the details. This is called skim reading or skimming
2.
Pay attention to:
1. Heading: A title printed at the top of a page to indicate the
subject matter
2. Title: Tells you what the text is about
3. Photographs: Pictures related to an article or a text
4. Captions: Comments on pictures related to a text
5. Figures, graphs, bar charts, etc.: To visualize facts and
figures presented in the text.
6. Summarizing is
a short outline of the text containing all its important aspects. The average
length of a good summary is about one-third of the original text.
7. Understanding the GIST – It is to understand the general meaning or core meaning or main theme.
8. Note-making – It is writing down
important information, ideas, facts, viewpoints, and arguments contained in the written text for future reference, in order to recall the main ideas in the text.
