LSRW - Listening, Speaking, Reading & Writing – Four Pillars Supporting A Strong “English Communication Skills” Edifice.
1 1. Listening
As Listening is a basic step towards speaking: Watching English News and Talk Shows / Debates on Television – Learning through observation and listening is a fundamental step towards speaking. “Listening” or “Imitating” a habit which we used to follow as a child but have forgotten now as we grow up. Use headphones to listen attentively, pick up words that are used in sentences with their proper pronunciation. You can also copy the styles of various speakers and gradually gain command of spoken English.
Learning day-to-day conversational sentences - By watching videos, role-plays and by practice and exposure to audiovisual media - to develop learning through observation, as this will accustom the learner with – What to say while you “start or end a conversation” and how to “greet someone” when you meet him or her.
Exposure to English Audio-Visual Media Watch Videos on YouTube Videos, English Movies, and using headphones to listen attentively will bring accuracy in your pronunciation and also will enhance your familiarity with the English Language.
2. Speaking
Form small groups of 4-5 friends and start conversing in English as practice. This will help you to do away with your hesitation as you will have familiar faces to practice or dry run what you have learned or picked up through your learning sessions.
Personality Development: Developing better English Communication skills as a public speaker, and building confidence with the help of JAM sessions as a basic measure. Learning the art of public speaking can develop your personality and confidence and can help you to deliver better presentations through constant practice, feedback, and improvement of your peer group.
3. Reading - English Newspaper daily - For at least 30 to 45 minutes, possibly Loudly
Identifying the words learned earlier in their proper contextual usage. This will provide the opportunity for pronunciation correction of the learner for the moderator. This is important as a “stand-alone” words learned, will not be of any use unless the learner understands their contextual reference, which this exercise will provide. Also learning to paraphrase or summarize what you have read, in your own words, will enhance your power of verbal expression. The newspaper acts as your “script” for dialogue delivery for any speaker in a Group Discussion or a Debate.
4. Writing - Diary, Paragraph, Essays,
etc.
Vocabulary building by daily learning 3 – 5 new words with their Synonyms and Antonyms on daily basis - forms as a basic step for improvement in English Written Communication, as words are the basic building blocks of any language. A bare minimum target of learning 1000 words of day-to-day usage along with a splash of idioms and phrases will embellish your writing skills effectively.
Spend at least one hour daily implementing the above steps, a practice which is to be done for a minimum of one year, which will develop your familiarity with the English Language and help you in gaining good command over the four pillars of the English Language -LSRW.
